Today we talked about needs and wants. What we need to go camping versus what we would like to bring. We talked about what a community is. They worked as teams to build a community. They did an awesome job.

Had a blast last week during math and crafts. We played a lot of fun math games, talked about some of the animals we would see camping, and made those animals. Come join us for our last week. We are doing science 😁 Lots of fun activities planned.

3-5th grades solved some “mysteries” today! They read passages and used secret codes to solve a fairy tale “crime”, learned how to use chopsticks, and mixed different components to make the perfect edible Jello silly puddy. It was unanimous that it didn’t taste good, but it was fun to play with and our classroom smelled fantastic!

Congrats Mollie Peterson for being chosen for 3rd team All State for Softball this Spring!
Thanks again Mr Vinyard for our Thursday workout @ Shawnee Fitness! Yesterday we did yoga with Jess Adams and could still feel the effects this morning! In the words of Mr Vinyard, yoga is sneaky hard! If you’ve never tried it, the Harrisburg Park District offers a few classes each week!

3-5th summer school took on a BIG project this morning and made solar ovens to cook s’mores! Below you will see the engineering process, the baking, and some of the eating. We took a vote before we started and most thought it would take 10-15 min for the s’mores to cook, but it only took about 5 due to the temperature! Special thanks to ROC for donating the pizza boxes! We had a TON of fun with science!

3-5th grade summer school started the day off talking about empathy and kindness. Students painted rocks with motivational messages and put them in various places around town! Let us know if you find one!
Our STEM activity today was a little magic, transforming a liquid (whipping cream) into a solid (butter). Everyone enjoyed eating their new creation on the rolls donated by Mrs. McCabe!

Grade School Parents:
Don't forget, if your child took pictures with Zoodles, they are in the office. The office is open from 8:00 to 11:00 today and tomorrow, as well as Tuesday-Thursday next week.
No Summer School on Monday, June 20
3-5th summer school beat the heat with STEM challenges today! Students looked up how to fold different types of paper airplanes, engineered their own, had a contest in the gym and measured to see who’s traveled the furthest.
1st Place Airplane- Malick
2nd Place Airplane- Brynn
3rd Place Airplane- Brody
Next, we discussed “buoyancy” and had a sink/float challenge. Each student crafted a boat from one 10x10 sheet of aluminum foil and tried to add 99 pennies without it taking on water. We had 2 students, Brynn and Autumn, get 99 pennies in their boat!

Alex Wallace from Egyptian Health Department spoke with the kids about setting goals and ways to stay motivated and/or focused. Sarah Heater also made a birthday cake to celebrate Ms Fletcher and Addy J’s birthdays!🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳We truly appreciate the way our community pours themselves and their resources into our youth! It’s a great day to be a Bearcat!!!!

Here are a few pictures of our new HS gym floor! It’s not finished yet, but it’s looking great!

3-5th grade summer Week 2! Our theme for the week is “Camping”. They played “Save Fred” with Mrs. Morris focusing on cognitive skills and fine motor skills. Students also identified trees by their leaves, learned about symmetry in nature, and completed leaf rubbing art with Mrs Ruccia. To end our day we played a fun listening/following directions based game called “Boom, clap, snatch”. This was our favorite leaf of the day. Do you know what tree it belongs to? Ask your student if you are stumped. They can tell you some of the cool facts we learned!

A huge thank you to Doug Seagraves for sharing his knowledge and love of disc golf with us at Karel Park this morning! We had a great time learning something new!

On Monday, June 20, 2022 we will not have summer school in observance of the federal holiday, Juneteenth. We will resume on Tuesday, June 21.
K-2 campers had a great day finishing our Reading week. We made lanterns to go camping, went fishing for sight words, and read some great camping stories and compared them to our own camping stories. Hope you come and join the fun with us next week during Math and crafts.

Shout out to Mr Vinyard for putting us through a HIIT workout today @ Shawnee Fitness! We will definitely feel it tomorrow 💪! Progress never felt so good!!!

3-5th grade celebrated their Week 1 “Summer Adventure” by making ice cream in a bag! This STEM activity incorporated chemistry, mixtures, measurement and time. We also had some great discussions on “why it’s hard to be a kid” and about inclusion. Take a second today to ask what they enjoyed most this week. See you all on Monday for our “camping” themed week 2!

K-2 campers are finishing up their first week of camping. We have had so much fun with Reading this week. Reading camping stories, flashlight reading, games, and activities. We have also made campfires, lighting bug catchers, bird feeders, and lanterns. Can't wait for next week, Math and crafts 😃😍. Come and join the fun 😊

3-5th grade STEM fun! 20 spaghetti sticks and 20 marshmallows to see which group could build the highest “building” and the one that could hold the most weight.
