K-1 had some special visitors today. Harrisburg Police Chief Officer Moore, Officer Bergman, and the K-9 came to teach our kids how the police and the K-9 keep us safe. They even showed the kids some demonstrations of what the dog can do. They showed how he could track, how he helps the cops on the job, and that he likes to have fun too. All of the kids really enjoyed. Thank you officers for coming.

2-3rd grade focused on seeds and flowers today! Our SEL focus was on the book "Bad Seed" and we made puppets to enjoy. Then, we used magnifying glasses to look inside flowers and dissected one to look at the insides while learning about all the different parts. We finished off the morning by making "dirt cups" with gummy worms for a snack.

2nd-5th grade Summer School toured the Saline Creek Pioneer Village & Museum today. The new Native American petroglyph exhibit was incredible! It's hard to believe it's 1,000 years old and was taken from a cave not far from here. There were so many pieces of history that started some amazing conversations. We walked inside and explored the original Poor House, the one room school house, Post Office/Country Store, jail, Blockhouse, cabins and a Quaker Church. Mr DeNeal was a wonderful guide and we thank him so much for taking the time to visit and lead us through history! (Photos continued in a 2nd post)

2-3rd grade Summer School spent time learning about watermelons today. We dug into one, counted seeds, had a speed spitting contest, made predictions and measured distances, did some chemistry to make one bubble like a volcano and enjoyed a tasty treat! We also made pudding slime and boy was it messy but also fun! Pudding slime pics will be in a separate post.

The K-2 kiddos took a field trip to the local Galatia Public Library today. They were introduced to the library, all its amazing resources and activities, enjoyed the librarian read a story, completed an ice cream craft, and finished up with exploring all the great things the library has to offer. The amazing librarians sent them off with their very own book to keep, a calendar of upcoming events, and a form for parents/caregivers to get them signed up for a library card. If you do choose to sign your child up for a library card, you can either return the form to the school or the library. Thanks to the Galatia Public Library and librarians for sharing this wonderful place!

4-5th grade Summer School had a "tasting" class today! There were many fruits that students had never tried and some students found a new favorite or two. They also asked 2-3rd grade to come over and try them too.

As always, 2nd-3rd Summer School started the day with some exercise. Then, we learned about and practiced fractions! What better way than to learn with food? We cut pepperoni into fractions and then made our own English Muffin pizzas. Everyone agrees these were SO much better than Bagel Bites. We also talked about how easy it is to make this healthy snack at home (with the help from an adult).

2nd-3rd Summer School discussed kindness today and how uplifting it is to give and receive words of encouragement. After reading the book Kindness Rocks by Sonica Ellis, we painted our own kindness rocks. If you see any around Galatia, take a pic for us and put it in the comments below!

What an awesome way to end our 1st week of summer school! In K-1, we learned all about seahorses, played letter/word beachball, and finished off the day having an AMAZING time painting on canvas of a beach, ocean scene! We have had a wonderful time during this 1st week and can't wait to begin our ocean adventures next week.

2nd-5th grade Summer School went on an adventure today! The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Rend Lake Visitor Center is a little gem that everyone should visit! There are interactive displays with local wildlife and land formations, live aquariums with local reptiles and fish, and a little theatre that teaches about the history of Southern Illinois. Our favorite was the indoor bee hive where we watched bees making honey and coming in and out of the building through a secret tunnel that leads to the flower garden where they are collecting nectar. We even had a few moments to play and take in the beautiful background of blue water while enjoying the sunshine.

2-3rd grade Summer School Day 3! Mrs. Hefner had a very engaging and impactful SEL lesson about how negative words can't be taken back once they are spoken. For our STEAM activity, each student showed off their creativity with watercolors and a canvas. We were also so thankful to the Harrisburg Fire Dept for visiting our school and teaching us about fire safety and letting us explore the fire truck!
