4-5th grade Summer School had a "tasting" class today! There were many fruits that students had never tried and some students found a new favorite or two. They also asked 2-3rd grade to come over and try them too.

As always, 2nd-3rd Summer School started the day with some exercise. Then, we learned about and practiced fractions! What better way than to learn with food? We cut pepperoni into fractions and then made our own English Muffin pizzas. Everyone agrees these were SO much better than Bagel Bites. We also talked about how easy it is to make this healthy snack at home (with the help from an adult).

2nd-3rd Summer School discussed kindness today and how uplifting it is to give and receive words of encouragement. After reading the book Kindness Rocks by Sonica Ellis, we painted our own kindness rocks. If you see any around Galatia, take a pic for us and put it in the comments below!

What an awesome way to end our 1st week of summer school! In K-1, we learned all about seahorses, played letter/word beachball, and finished off the day having an AMAZING time painting on canvas of a beach, ocean scene! We have had a wonderful time during this 1st week and can't wait to begin our ocean adventures next week.

2nd-5th Summer School field trip (cont)

2nd-5th grade Summer School went on an adventure today! The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Rend Lake Visitor Center is a little gem that everyone should visit! There are interactive displays with local wildlife and land formations, live aquariums with local reptiles and fish, and a little theatre that teaches about the history of Southern Illinois. Our favorite was the indoor bee hive where we watched bees making honey and coming in and out of the building through a secret tunnel that leads to the flower garden where they are collecting nectar. We even had a few moments to play and take in the beautiful background of blue water while enjoying the sunshine.

Hey GGS Family if any of these treasures belong to your student & want to claim them please stop by next week between 8-11.

2-3rd grade Summer School Day 3! Mrs. Hefner had a very engaging and impactful SEL lesson about how negative words can't be taken back once they are spoken. For our STEAM activity, each student showed off their creativity with watercolors and a canvas. We were also so thankful to the Harrisburg Fire Dept for visiting our school and teaching us about fire safety and letting us explore the fire truck!

K-1 today learned about crabs. We played some fun learning games. Then we also did a STEM activity about grasshoppers and what makes them jump.

Today K-5 had a visitor that came to the school to teach them about fire safty. Dustin Gunning from the Harrisburg Fire Department did a wonderful job and the kiddos really enjoyed it.

Yesterday K-1 did a STEM project to see who could build a boat that floats in the water. All of the kiddos built on that float, but one held the most bears and that was Walker's. We also played some fun games, 4th and 5th came to read to us, and we learned about jellyfish.

2nd-3rd grade explored the stars today. Look at these amazing marshmallow and toothpick constellations!

Here are a few pictures from K-1 under the sea. We had fun learning about sea turtles and doing some fun activities. The kids loved writing the room ocean style. We also did a fun STEM activity about how bees collect pollen.

Scenes from 2-3rd grade summer school! Our STEM activity for the day was about DENSITY. Students made predictions, tested and experimented with sink/float items and then built their own boat to see how much weight it could hold.

Summer school starts Monday from 8-11at the Grade School. K-1 wants you to come on an underwater adventure this summer. We have a lot of fun activities planned these next 3 weeks. Hope to see you under the sea.

Into the Woods Jr. DVD's are at the high school. We will send them home with students today, or parents may pick them up in the office.
The High School Intro to FCS class competed in a Food Truck Expo and Face-Off yesterday! These students worked very hard over the past month preparing for this day. Please help us vote on the winner by giving a heart or thumbs up for your favorite!

8th Grade Trip!

Today the 5th grade visited the local Veteran's Memorial. In these final days of class, and with Memorial Day next week, we have been discussing how to honor the sacrifices made by our nation's heroes.
